As old folks often do, I have a tremor in my hands. Yesterday morning I gave Frank's method of observing a try. What a difference it makes! Don't adjust the contact while holding the sextant up, just estimate how much is needed, bring the sextant down, make the adjustment, and try the contact again. It isn't tiring, and you can use both hands to steady the sextant.
For me, the best use of the left hand seems to be as a bridge between the right wrist and the arc of the sextant. In standard position this means putting the left thumb on the arc and the left fingers on the right wrist. Holding the eye cup of the 'scope tight against my eyeglasses helps control the wobble, too.
