Here's a little twist for you...Tell a GPS chartplotter to plot a course on a long voyage (say from Maine to England). What do you think the results will be? It will show you a rhumb line on the screen, but the course it will tell you to follow will be the initial course on a great circle route. If you interface it with an autopilot it will indeed follow a great circle in spite of showing a rhumb line. This quirk has caused a few problems, particularly amongst the group that believes you can put unending faith in the little box!
