Precisely. That was part of the theory that I read about several years ago. The author contended that mass extinctions could have occured when the earth's magnetic field was at zero. He also postulated that this might have coincided with a nearby supernova which resulted in an additional cosmic ray loading on the planet, thus extinguishing a large swath of animals and plants.
