A GPS receiver can be a good substitute for a shortwave receiver as an accurate time source, if you first confirm its accuracy. I think it's already been pointed out here that the displayed time may be in error by a few seconds. Mine are sometimes bang on, other times one second off. This is insignificant for the bubble sextant celestial sights I do at home. However, I've learned that some receivers can be several *minutes* off. The error is apparently undetectable, the receiver's other functions being unaffected. A memory reset is necessary to clear it. Thankfully, this seems to be confined to a few models: http://groups.google.com/groups?as_umsgid=3ED928DF.E4B7C366%40nrri.umn.rmv.edu http://groups.google.com/groups?as_umsgid=7efulv8o6a0e6a8bau57khqia83lifql9j%404ax.com
