I have figured out where I learned to use this notation, H.O. 214 uses "a lamda" for assumed longitude. It also uses "delta" for the declination, LHA, and latitude adjustments, although the normal use of the table was to just do the "delta d" adjustment. The other adjustments are only used if working from a D.R.
