    Folks,

This is _totally_ implementation specific.  As has been mentioned in past posts, different manufactures treat the GC problem differently.  From a very casual observation, the more “marine” versions tend to always default to a GC route and the leisure markets go for rhumb-line courses.  Gary, I am struck, however, that you’ve been looking at a single unit and haven’t really played with a selection of implementations.

I use three separate units on board.  Two hardwired (Raymarine 120, and a MLR Differential unit) as well as a handheld Garmin 48.  I also use two chart plotters (Raymarine 520 and Raytech software).  The chart plotters all default to great circle routes and only use the current position as input from the GPS units (as well as COG, SOG, etc.)

    C.

And in the same Line tab (same GPS model), if you turn off the Course line,
you end up with only the "rumb line" to your destination.

Which is not where the GPS is going to take you!
