I made a mistake (how unusual) tabulating one of Arthur Pearson's distances, and his first observation in his first set is not an outlier. The mean and standard deviation of difference from true GMT are 169 plus or minus 52 seconds. That's about plus or minus 0.4' of arc, which is pretty good for the conditions he describes. Fred
