Ebay has the best buys but there are several things to watch out for. Bidding on anything from India or Russia is a real gamble. Ebay images show well so knock down one grade on pictured condition. Images need to show all the mirrors to be fully silvered. Optics should appear scratch and crack free. Shade count full and crack free. The arc should be shown free of corrosion. The micrometer drum numbers fully legible. Box in good order. And very important is to see the adjustment tool pictured within the box. Request bubble wrap stuffed on the inside of the box to insure against rattling around with rough handling. Do not bid on a sextant model that you are not familiar with.
Now for the most important tip. Have a maximum budget in mind and then snipe the bid in the last ten seconds of bidding with the maximum amount. This may mean setting an alarm clock so as to be ready for the bid.
Good luck and good bidding,
Greg Rudzinski
