    Gyro Error.
    From: Byron Franklin

Byron: It appears that the people at the Navlist are not interest gyro error. and the effects on all shipping and also not knowledgeable in the gyro error that waist time and money to the shipping and navies of the world.
I have had the experience of the effects of small gyro error and what it can do to a ship. The Intrepid the mighty air craft carrier coming in to Newport Narragansett Bay ran aground, in fog. The Intrepid had a 1.5 W gyro error after the gyro was set in the yards by the usually way of a sun azimuth using the faulty Azimuth Circle. I have seen countless ships with the same problem of setting the error in the yards using the Azimuth Circle. It is a one shot correction that depends on a instrument that is needed at sea for a check on the gyro, but should not be used to set the gyro. Navlist has the people that can voice a strong opinion of a better and more accurate ways of setting the compass. I am not talking about only Navy ships but also merchant ships as well. How many miles could be saved if the gyro was on the money with zero or near a decimal error?
I would understand that most are not interested in gyro small errors.
The Franklin piloting Technique using bearings of Navaids using a bearing circle is more accurate than a bearing of the sun (Azimuth circle) the same bearing circle, equipment that is used to pilot the ship into hazardous water is more accurate, than the fragile Azimuth Circle needed at sea where only the sun may be avaiable. The equipment used to set the gyro must be accurate down to or near the decimal, for steering and taking of bearings, the Franklin Piloting Technique can fill that for accurate gyro correction.
An accurate ship course could save a lot of steering correcting course time and money.
A lot could be learned and a real help to the shipping industry as well as the sea services.
Do you have the equipment and the know how to evaluate? Let us help our Merchant shipping navy and Coast Guard.
