    That’s very thorough research Bill.  Did you compare the time from level to toppled to the time from start-up to level?  Observation of a spinning top is that levelling takes minutes, whereas toppling takes seconds https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m1PpL77vcOM .  My feeling is that the levelling precession in the vertical plane is both tiny and reduces further as the gyro approaches level, whereas toppling occurs very quickly once the gyro RPM falls below the threshold necessary to maintain rigidity.  DaveP
