    I visited a startup in Mountain View a few years ago that was trying to do an 
    inertial navigator for cars. They were using the silicon accelerometers that 
    others
    have mentioned and, IIRC, reed gyros.
    
    I think that differential gps will end up much cheaper than any of these. It 
    can be used to measure attitude of relatively small platforms. For course 
    heading they
    potentially have the whole boat length for a base.
