    Re: H.O. 229/249: publication dates

I remember that the preface to my copy of 229 said that the tables were calculated using an IBM 1401 computer.   (Sorry, I can't lay my hands on my book, it's probably buried in some unopened box of books from my last move).

The preface said that these were the first set of computer-generated sight reduction tables (at least in the modern sense of "computer," the pre-WW II usage of "computer" was someone (typically female) who computed something using a mechanical calculator, so I guess those older sight reduction tables were "computer"-generated, too).

The 1401 was introduced in late 1959.

My guess would therefore be that 229 appeared in the mid-60s.

According to the Mystic Seaport website (Milestones in the History of
    Navigation):

"1981 Sight Reduction Tables for Marine Navigation is published, H.O. 229,
as six volumes calculated and typeset by computer"

    ...though I could have sworn that 229 pre-dated 249 (?).
