I have the "practice bubble horizon" that Celestaire sells. No good at night. Is there an illuminated version that does not cost $900?
I recall the scene from Das Boot. I try to imagine Tintin directed by Wolgang Petersen.

Patrick,
You must of course keep after it until mastered. Try picking up a bubble sextant (octant) on ebay for backyard practice or through the kitchen window observations during winter. After putting in some hours with the bubble sextant then a regular sextant will seem rock solid.
As for the movies - give Das Boot a watch. There is a great sextant and sight reduction scene where the whole crew is hovering over the poor navigator at the sub's chart table.
