Greg:
The explanatory version you saw is actually not meant to be used for real work - it is particularly inaccurate because of imperfections of the graphical program used to create it. It is meant to explain the procedure.
I would like to create a working version of this diagram. As of now I am unsure what scales should be incorporated w/o crowding it. I also ask myself if 2 versions make sense: one for the azimuth one for the hight. However, aiming for an error < 1 deg is probably unrealistic. As to your proposal: Most errors have already occurred until step "5" I think.
If you would, could you please make some additional recommendations: Size, transparent scales as overlays, descriptions - whatever comes to mind. Goals for me are: practical, fast, easy to explain/remember, one page system(?)

Hanno,
Here are graph results for a low altitude observation of Venus from yesterday.
UT 03:58:36 8/3/2013
Lat 34* 10.5' N
Dec 7* 29.1' N
LHA 86* 37'
C1 = .072
C2 = .82
C3 = .05
C1+C3 = .122
Lat 34* 10.5' N
Dec 7* 29.1' N
LHA 86* 37'
C1 = .072
C2 = .82
C3 = .05
C1+C3 = .122
Arc Sin .122 = 7* 00' Hc
Palm Pilot Program = 6* 59.1' Hc
Your graph is easy to use. Got the correct Hc on the first try :) I will recommend that a sin trig table be used for the final Arc Sin of the C1&C3 sum rather than the graph for an improved Hc. The graph beats the 10" slide rule here I think.
