My climate colleagues tell me that modeling aerosols in computer simulations is quite problematic for similar reasons.

Out here in New England in the summertime, the horizon is often obscured by junk - sometimes just haze.   My wife calls it "John-John" weather, after the famous plane crash by John Kennedy Junior off of Martha's Vineyard.   Even a star like Antares has to rise maybe 10 degrees or more for it to become visible under these "clear" conditions.

Thank you! As it turns out, he was referenced quite a few times in that link I posted previously:
    http://www.icq.eps.harvard.edu/ICQExtinct.html,
which is reassuring. He's quoted there are saying that the variability of extinction due to atmospheric aerosols is "rabid"... which made me laugh. It's an apt description.

And welcome back, George. Hope you're feeling well, and I do hope you'll find time to post on NavList. While summers are often quiet on NavList, presumably because people find better things to do when the weather is nice (and we're a mostly northern hemisphere group), this month will probably turn out to have the lowest message volume since 2008.
