    Dear Bill,

Thank you very much for your response.

I have, though, already seen this WEB site earlier and obtained a copy of the
1929/30 publication in the New Zealand Journal of Science and Technology,
which up to now has been one of my prime sources on the history of the IDL.

I recently came across another useful source for the history of the IDL prior
    to 1900 in:

H.M. Wallis & A.H. Robinson, Cartographic Innovations: An
International Handbook of Mapping Terms to 1900 (Map Collector
Publications, Londen, 1982), art. 'Date Line'.
