John,
The ship was 8 nautical miles away in the north bound traffic lane. This would be below the horizon for my height of eye which was 16 feet. The distance to the horizon for a H.E. of 16 ft. is 4.7 NM. It could be that a cool early morning land breeze has moved over the traffic lanes as a thin layer. Later in the afternoon this mirage effect may disappear.

Greg -
Usually when you get a mirage like that the sea temp is a bit above the local air temp. How far out was that vessel, do you reckon?
