Michael,
Linked is a diagram showing two intersecting 45* horizontal angle circles with the corresponding A,B,C bearings. Notice what an intentional compass error of 10* does (see red triangle to left of true position). On a radar screen there is a similar but different relationship between bearings and distance ranges. Ranges are the better fix than bearings.
