Byron: you will not get good accurcy with a hand held or magnetic compass, but you can get the best fix possible with what equipment you have if you use my Franklin Pilotting Technique. It is in many Navy publications, but you only need a simple set of rules. THe magnetic compass has much randon error because of jumping aroundand unsteady movements, but reasomable fixes can be had. If you are in a Variation as area as noted on chart of over 5 degrees, correct or use the inter compass rose. On the internet or on navlist type 'Franklin Piloting Technique" Give a try and you will find it easy and useful.
