Sorry for addressing a subject not related to navigation, but the Slavic word for bear ("medved" in Russian, "vedmid" in Ukrainian) really comes from two ancient roots "med" (honey) and "ed" or "et" which means to eat.
In the modern spelling "ved" sounds like a word for "know" but this is an accidental coincidence.
