Please no more posts on medved. I'll take the last word: as Alex notes, the connection with Sanskrit ved is indeed an accident. Professional linguists who have studied Indo-European roots for over two centuries are in general agreement that medved means "honey eater", not "honey knower". And that's the bear necessities on that one!
