Two items I can't resist adding to the conversation.
The least squares fit to a set of data following a linear relationship is the average, so it is not hard to do.
If a series of lops, say 3, are obtained in the presence of systematic errors and random errors then averaging sights will diminish effect of random errors and picking the centroid of the triangle will elilminate the systematic error.
