    The Ifland Collection.

    The Ifland Collection.

List member Peter Ifland has made a wide-ranging collection of sextants and
other position-finding instruments, many of which are featured, in superb
photographs, in his magnificent book "Taking the Stars".

He has generously presented his collection to the Mariners' Museum in
Newport News, and I understand that a special display of the collection is
being assembled at the museum to coincide with the Scientific Instrument
Symposium. This will be held from 29 Sept to 5 Oct, at the Mariners' Museum
and the National Museum of American History in Washington. Information
about the symposium can be found at .

I don't know whether the Ifland collection will be on display to the
visiting public over that period (perhaps Peter or someone else might
confirm this) but if it is, I think anyone with a navigational bent would
find a visit to be well worth while.

    George.
