Frank has pointed out the problems associated with using just the NA to handle occulations. BUT, this is not the same as saying Aubrey could not have handled one. He would have needed other resources. For example, LaLande's Astronomie. (Which the preface to the NA shown by Frank points out is the source of data for positions in the NA.) So, I suggest we needn't give up yet on Aubrey, just assume he had resources in addition to the NA available. Possible?
>>Thanks Frank, for your detailed exposition of the NA contemporary to

>>allow a meaningful Venus occultation. So, as Albert correctly said,
>>we cannot consider this as a candidate.
>>My view is that the observation was, after all, a literary invention.
>>Not quite as bad a John Wayne calling out the latitude and longitude
>>to the nearest second while staring through a sextant, but equally
>>not representative of the reality of astro-navigation in 1805.
>>Thanks to everyone for trying, anyway.
