I just finished reading the book Down the Great Unknown by Edward Dolnick, about the John Wesley Powell expedition down the Colorado River in 1869. Powell was the first to navigate the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon with three boats and nine men. Great story. Powell brought a sextant but the author never mentions the method he used or any difficulties he might have had being over a 1/2 mile below the plateau of Arizona. Any info would be appreciated.
