I use a 3D printed mount for my Kollsman and clamp that to the top of a tripod. I bungee the Kollsman to the mount.
With the bowl head tripod, i can level the sextant and put the bubble on the reticle in a trice. A pan head lets me track the object in azimuth. (Be careful using a ball-head instead of a bowl head - the ball head is, of course, very top heavy and wants to flop over which would not be good for the Kollsman.)
For power, I have had great success using USB batteries (5V) wired to a DC-DC voltage converter to get 28V then to the matching Amphenol connectors to the instrument.
A friend designed and printed the mount for me - he is happy to make the 3D printer files available for free.
With this setup, I can take 3-star timed sights just as easily as from the proper mount.
