You're close. You set zero in the azimuth counter, not the TH, and then everything turns out as you described. This is the method I use because the other two methods, either cranking in the ZN or the relative bearing, requires quite a bit of time in the two minute period between shots.

I tried posting this reply in NavList, but it doesn't go through.

I was taught a memory aid for setting up the sextant by an airline navigator.

It was TH-ZN. Set the true heading in the counter. Then compute TH-ZN and turn the sextant to find the result of the subtraction in the sextant field of view. Of course you have to add 360 to the TH before subtracting in many cases. This is a simple calculation to do during precomp and only takes a few seconds.

During one of the shots write down the number under the lubber line in the sextant field and add ZN to get TH for a compass check.

This quick and easy way was used by the airline navigators I flew with.
