People who build these wonderful navigation tools probably care more about the accuracy of their math than the quality of horizon under Polaris.

As you sit now with ECDIS by your side – just consider how fabulous the information is to hand – especially if you have RADAR & AIS all connected in as with the most modern ones I have seen. (I still work on board various vessels – but not as ship’s crew). I read now that in the future, satellite map features will also be integrated – i.e. you will see something like a Google Earth underlay and the radar returns of the coast fitting in with the map features. I guess in the early models you may have to align the two – but I am sure even that will become automated in time.
