    LUNARS SEMINAR at Mystic Seaport
    From: Frank Reed CT
    Date: 2004 May 31, 22:30 EDT
Sorry to be away from the list for over a week. I've been busy on a couple of projects most notably finalizing plans with Mystic Seaport for a Lunars Seminar... Sorry for the short notice, but it is likely that I will do this program again and I should be able to give better advance notice.

    Here's a brief official announcement:
    "On Monday 21 June 2004 from 5:00 - 7:30 P.M., Frank Reed will deliver
the first Susan Peterson Howell Memorial Lecture in the Munson Room
at the G.W. Blunt White Library.  His topic is Longitude by Lunar
Distance - Navigation in the 18th and 19th Century.  This will be of
special interest to Museum Educators who share their knowledge of
navigation with the public and to Munson Institute Students.  The
first hour of Frank's presentation will focus on the history of
longitude by lunars, then following a brief intermission he will lead
attendees through the procedure of taking a lunar with a sextant and
doing the computations to obtain the longitude.  Lunar Distances were
in the Nautical Almanac through the first decade of the twentieth
century!   Please call extension 5151 at the Planetarium to make a
    reservation for this free presentation."

This is open to the public. If any on the list are going to be in Connecticut and would like to join us, please call Mystic Seaport at 860.572.5302 x.5151. Mystic Seaport is located in Mystic, Connecticut at latitude 41d 22' N and longitude 71d 58' W.

We'll be talking about the real history of lunars and discussing some of the myths about them, both pro and con. Weather-permitting, you'll have the opportunity to shoot a lunar from the deck of the last of the old Yankee whalers, the 143-year-old Charles W. Morgan (moored at her pier, of course!).

This program is sponsored and funded by the Susan P. Howell Memorial Fund.
