I should have clarified that I only average lunar distances. Historically,
averaging the observations saved time on the computation. Today, computation is
cheap, so it really doesn't make much difference whether you average the inputs
(the actual observations, that is) or the outputs of the calculation.
And:

establish a fix, it becomes inappropriate."
That seems very reasonable. I agree.
