    Uhm, yes, 2.5, 5MHz AM are within reason to pick up on a crystal set, a top end DX rig and a large antenna should work,as long as signal is strong enough and your hearing good enough.
    competition grade DX crystalsets cost more than a bought resiever.
    just my phones alone are something like 80€ (2 decades ago) then we have all the other components litz wire for the coils, capacitors, chokes, transformer... easily 200-400€ if you keep everything top end.
    You more or less will have to if you want to hear the signal with any kind of reliablity, and still not as good as a good and certainly more fragile than even a cheap World band radio for fraction of the cost, interesting challenge though.
