Whoops...meant "nautical twilight" in both lines.
Civil twilight might not be dark enough to see some stars.
Defn' - civil is after sunset and the sun is above -6 deg alt (may be tough to see stars)
nautical - sun is -6 to -12 (stars and horizon)
astronomical - sun is -12 to -18 (may be tough to see horizon)

Where are you located? Probably the easiest thing to do is to take two shots around celestial twilight (after sunset when the horizon is still visible). Then, there are plenty of stars, in Boston, we have Arcturus setting, Dubhe, Schedar, Fomalhaut, Capella rising, Alpheratz, Vega, Deneb and Altair at the time of nautical twilight.

I am learning on my own at present from books on celestial navigation.I need to get a fix with two lines of position but not sure which celestial body other than the sun and the best times of the day to achieve the fix.
