    Hello Eitan

You asked "Why is it called a hack watch?"

Attached, please find article number 2322* from Dutton's Navigation & Piloting, 12th Edition.  In the article a hack watch is described and defined. The fundamental phrase is "...employed to time celestial observations...." One would never take the chronometer on deck, ever.  But the observation must be timed anyway.  How?  The hack watch.

You may better know the split second feature using a watch term, to wit, rattrapante.

    Brad

*chapter 23 Time and article 22 Comparing Watch (aka hack watch).
