For those interested in fairly technical discussions of very big telescopes, you might check: Telescopes by Kuiper 1960.
relavance link: includes a chapter by markowitz of the USNO on "The photographic zenith tube and dual-rate moon-position cameras" used to develop data in support of the NA. Also, "the impersonal astrolabe" by danjon himself (then director of the Paris Observatory) Used to support CdT.
