Bill, > Alex has in the past looked poorly on natural horizon IE/IC. 1. Natural horizon is rarely so well defined as a star or a Sun's edge. 2. The Russian book "Precision of astronomical observations" says that (based on large statistics) IC from horizon is much less precise than that from the Sun. > Alex has some stringent requirements on > accepting sun IE/IC checks with > semi-diameter figures based on the SNO-T manual Yes. SNO manual says that 4SD should match the almanac value to 0.4'. Otherwise, it says, the measurement should be repeated. And the previous result rejected. > Given the above paragraph and the rapid change of the moon's SD, > it seems > foolish to apply sun standards to the moon. It is only foolish to use the almanac value for the Moon SD. But the whole test seems to be sound. The almanac indeed does not give Moon's SD with sufficient precision. But Frank explained in a recent message how to compute Moon's SD. > You have noted in the past that a bit of side error may be useful Later Frank corrected this statement. It can be useful for IC checks with stars. But it is certainly harmful with Sun or Moon checks.
