Alex,
Scopes, binoculars, cameras seem to exhibit optical aberrations at the perimeter of the fields of view. Expensive optics are suppose to correct for this. Also I have noticed some fringe effects on sextant filters.

The peep is 1/4 of an inch in diameter. The down side is that the field of view is decreased and this is why I remove it for conventional observations where absolute precision isn't as critical.
