Brahe measured star (or sun) altitudes simultaneously with the event to be timed. Cook still did the same for his transit and eclipse observations. It's good to have an assistant for this. And you can do it that way for lunar distances if you loose your watch. You can find time and position simultaneously. (But the information won't do you much good at sea without a watch).
