Going on poor old memory-Institute of Navigation article four or five years 
ago gave rework of Joshua Slocum's calculation about a century ago and the 
report of the symposium "The Quest for Longitude" (I believe by Derek Howse) 
gives facsimilie of a set of calculations.  I am about 1950nm away from refs. 
so please forgive  E&OE.
