Dave, you found: "The only appearance of the word lunar in Moby Dick"... A couple of quick thoughts: First, I don't think Melville knew navigation. At least I've never seen any evidence that he knew anything about it beyond a general familiarity with its objectives and its tools. Second, the entity "Moby Dick" was many things, but he was not a whale.
