    Thank you Kermit, now I understand this way of thinking. It does however rely on very accurate altitudes; in the Lichtenstein case the altitudes were by definition of less good quality. Thus I believe using the altitide difference, which was very close to the measured distance, is a safer way to solve this vertical lunar. 

    But it may be that an equal error in both altitudes doesn't have a large impact on your method, I have not checked that.
