    I know we are all a bunch of old salts here, but has anyone used a
    theodolite for a celestial site?  I know in theory, they are far more
    accurate, and I was wondering just how accurate a fix one can get. Would
    it be accurate enough for the Mars project?
    
    I have read of position determining cameras that are meant for use in
    space that just take the all the stars they can see and do the math, but
    they are still NASA type objects that have not made it to the hands of
    mortals.  The one I read of had a lost in space capability where you
    could just turn it on and it would tell you where you were in space.
    Undoubtedly it would work on Earth and Mars, and should not even be
    expensive since it is mostly software driven, and cameras are cheap.
    The sites that talk about them, of course, don't give details as to
    accuracy.
