This is a reminder to anyone within striking distance of London in a couple of weeks time. The one-day symposium, on "Navigational instruments as a source of historical information", will be held at the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, on Thursday, 16th November. Besides me and my wife Joan, there will be several other NavList contributors or lurkers, that I know of. One other from England, one from Scotland, and one from the border between them. One from Germany, one from Holland, and one from Australia. And those are just the ones with a NavList connection. So it will be a cosmopolitan gathering. The symposium will cost 15 (including lunch and refreshments) To book a place please contact: Janet Norton, Research Administrator, National Maritime Museum, Greenwich LONDON SE10 9NF E-mail jnorton@nmm.ac.uk. In addition, on the evening of Friday 17 November the Annual Lecture of the Scientific Instrument Society will be given by Dr Willem Mrzer Bruyns, who holds the National Maritime Museum's 2005-07 Sackler Research Fellowship in the History of Astronomy and Navigational Sciences. The talk will focus on the Museum's collection of navigating instruments. This meeting is free for anyone to attend, without prearrangement, and starts at 6 pm. It will be held at the Society of Antiquaries, Burlington House, Piccadilly, London W1. Willem was director, now retired, of the Scheepvaartsmuseum of Amsterdam.
