Let me step back into this again. I remember where the Deutsche Seefahrt came from that I submitted as a synonium for merchant marine..
There were some WW II era C. Plath sextants that had a D.S. imprinted on their index arm. The story I was told is that it meant Deutsche Seefahrt. German Seafaring, hence German Merchant Marine. I have also seen a couple of certificates with the same imprint. This meant something different than D.H.I. which is the German Hydrographic Institute which is responsible for certifying sextants that are used in commerical service.
Any clarification that you, Henry, or anyone else can provide will be appreciated.
