Wolfgang, please consult Marinewoerterbuch, 5-sprachig, herausgegeben vom
Oberkommando der Kriegsmarine, in about 1942, wherein merchant marine =
Handelsmarine; merchant navigation = Handelsschiffahrt; and, merchant
ship = Handelsschiff. Languages do change and Germans were/are notorious
for building elaborate and descriptive nouns, buit when I sailed aboard
German ships I described myself as being in the Handelsschiffmarine, or
Handelsmarine - after all, I did say "at one time". Would be interested
in discussing with you a search for a german book that I have been
looking for over the years.
