    I have had good results with the following setup.

    I glued a lithography photomask ( essentially a high quality flat front surface mirror ) to a similar sized block of wood. I drilled the wood block to take the mounting screw from a photo tripod.

    On the tripod, I adjust the level in several ways that work.

    1) use a small trysquare bubble level. level rotate 180 and see that it reads the same. Then do again in perpendicular direction.

    2) a second way is to observe a plumb bob string beside the mirror. String and reflected string should be continuous not angled. Do from perpendicular sides.

    I would guess that any mirror will do. Use whatever you can find around. At worst you can buy a quality mirror if it doesn't work.
