Re: Modern sextant production. Reply from SNO-T factory.

    Alex,

My mistake. Freiberger  did provide certificates including excentricity error figures every 10° along the arc.
For unknown reasons they also issued certificates without figures just saying; "Gebrauch als felherfrei zu bezeichnen."
The "GUT" qualification was only used as a qualitative assessment of the filters and scope conditions.

As for excentricity specifications, I was told that the ordinary "Drum" model excentricity should not exceed 30" and the more expensive "SIRIUS" model was supposed to feature an excentricity error of less than 20".

But this doesn't seem to be completely true as I found a Freiberger certificate indicating errors of up to 45" at 110° and 120° marks.

    JPP

    Jean Philippe,

I am glad they are still in business, and I am surprised
with 54" arc error, perhaps there is another reason for this
    error which Wolfgang overlooked?
If I bought a new sextant with such arc error, I would
    inquire at the factory.

It is not true that they just write "Gut" in the certificates, or
ar least this was not the case in 2005.
(It is Cassens-Plath who write this).
    I have a beautiful
genuine Freiberger certificate for my SNO-T, written on the
printed Freiberger's table with their logo, and showing
actual corrections in seconds for every 10 degrees,
from 0 to 120, which were
    measured in my presence.
The errors it shows are so small, the largest is 10",
that I never use these numbers.

But 54" cannot be caled "Gut", even for everyday navigation
if we aim at 1' overall accuracy.
However, their advertizing booklet that I have does not specify what
    "Gut" means exactly :-)

    Alex.
