I saw the moon rise on June 28, 2009 off of the coast of Indonesia in the Indian Ocean, about 7 degrees south. I was able to shoot amplitudes both at the celestial and sea horizon.

I had pre-calculated the azimuth of the moon prior to rise to be sure I was looking in the correct direction at the critical moment. The observations were good ones.

I have seen moonrise and moonset about 5 times, and most of those in a 2-3 day span. It takes an incredibly clear horizon to see it. I saw them in the tropics. They are usually accompanied by Green Flashes at sunrise/set.

    Jeremy
