I think we'll have to wait 20+ years to find out what really happened.   Who is trying to spook whom?     Historically, there have been tons of intelligence plants over and over again.   If the US says "please give it back" and the Iranians boast about it, I have to say that it 'smells' like a deliberate plant.

If I were a nation state with new capability I wouldn't be bragging like the Iranians are in this article. GPS signals are weak but radar and inertial back-ups can override if necessary. I don't believe everything in this article and for sure Iran won't be able to benefit from the lost drone.
