The "Navigational watch" is an A-8 stop watch, used originally for timing bombing runs. It is unusual in that it beats 40 to the second instead of the usual 5 beats and has a decimal dial. One full turn of the large hand takes only 10 seconds and the small dial at 12 o'clock counts up to five minutes. They were made by Elgin.

The sextant was almost certainly made by Brandis. The style of the magnifier arm and horizon mirror mounting are rather distinctive. The slender frame suggests it may be a quite early instrument. The name is usually to be found on the index arm, including sometimes who it was made for (US Lighthouse SErvice, US Navy, etc). The company traded as F Brandis and Co from 1979, as F Brandis, Sons and Co from 1890 and as Brandis and Sons Inc from 1916. Pioneer instrument Co gained a controlling interest in 1922 and was itself taken over by Bendix Aviation Corporation in 1928. Manufacture under the Brandis name stopped in 1922.
