Most of my observing has been with British sextants, so I thought I’d better try with a 24V Kollsman Bubble Model.  It works fine on the widow ledge.  You don’t need any timber.  The bottom is so flat that a deck of playing cards is sufficient.  I never use the averager on the ground; it’s only there to reduce acceleration errors, and my house and the Astrovan are both pretty static.  As Gary says, you can complete daytime shots without electricity.  Unlike British sextants, which will only allow you to observe if you’ve remembered to wind them up, Kollsmans don’t appear to have any interlock shutters, so you might not even need to power up your smart electric averager if observing from the ground.  Try it.  Have you worked out how to make a bubble yet?  That can be fun.  DaveP
